PS3 wont turn of right or load anything, help?

Ok so i just recently started downloading a demo for a game (not sure if that had something to do with it) anyways i noticed my system sorta running sluggish and i tried going on the internet browser but it froze on me, i went to turn off the system and it beeped but never turned off, my tv screen went blank as if the system were off but it was still running, the green button keeped blinking. I was finally able to turn it off by holding down the power button but when i turn it on my controller wont sync and nothing loads up, ex. my friends list or users accounts wont even show up . The only thing that comes up is the system setting but when i try to go into anything it just freezes again. Does anyone know what i can do to fix this?
